PLASTIC FANTASTIC

D MUSEUM presents PLASTIC FANTASTIC, a exhibition presenting designs born from the artistic imagination of international designers and the unlimited possibilities of plastic, from September 14, 2017 to March 4, 2018.

PLASTIC FANTASTIC illustrates the magical journey of plastic; the substance entered the public realm and brought such wide-ranging transformation to our everyday lives, only to be described as the miracle material from the 20th century. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the remarkable ways in which some 40 of the most highly acclaimed designers of the world have drawn on their strong sense of character and willingness for challenge to produce more than 2,700 works of furniture, lighting, graphics, and photographs. Featured are pioneering designer Anna Castelli Ferrieri, who brought a new sense of elegance and functionality to industrial plastic, ushering the material into the realm of the household; Philippe Starck, the iconic industrial designer of the 20th century; Patricia Urquiola, the designer with the Midas touch that influences the entire global design market; Tokujin Yoshioka, the genius creator behind the most inspiring designs that transcend the boundaries between poetic language and art; Piero Lissoni the great authority of Italian Minimalism; and Ferruccio Laviani, a global lighting designer.

A key highlight of PLASTIC FANTASTIC is its exploration of the close collaboration between such some 40 giant designers and Kartell, the world‟s leading manufacturer of Italian design that has been pioneering the plastic innovation for over three generations. In a selection of remarkable works handpicked from its vast archive, viewers will also experience the sense of Italy’s uniquely humorous and bold style through a combination of graphics, illustrations, and photographs that capture plastic furniture in inventive perspectives of renowned artists.

The word “plastic”, originates from the Greek word plassein meaning “to mould.” In the same spirit PLASTIC FANTASTIC illustrates a wide-raging of the organic evolution produced by the interplay between this endlessly flexible, ever-changing material and artistic and creative expression. The exhibition reveals the works that capture magical moments when the amazing imaginations of master designers come together with plastic to produce pure innovation.
