ART IS COMIC

The Mima Museum (Brussels) presents “Art is Comic” An exhibition that reflects on the humor in the comic “The artists in the show represent a specific style that lies with the origins of Juxtapoz; dark humour through the guise of comics. Make sure to check this show out at MIMA!” Artists: Brecht Vandenbroucke, Mon Colonel & Spit, Brecht Evens, HuskMitNavn, Jean Jullien, Joan Cornellà. Curators: Alice van den Abeele & Raphaël Cruyt in collaboration with Brecht Vandenbroucke. Scenography: Alice van den Abeele & Raphaël Cruyt in collaboration with Antoine Bouillot for Maison Renard. Until 31 December 2017

JOAN CORNELLÀ. “I agree with the quote from Bill Hicks: ‘I believe that there is an equality to all humanity. We all suck.’ In my comics, my paintings, the characters look artificial and always have a big smile on their face even though horrible things happen to them all the time. Everything is exaggerated, although a certain behaviour has a ring of truth to it.”

JEAN JULLIEN. “You can be practical without being serious. Even better, you can actively participate in people’s lives by bringing a little art into their daily environment.”

BRECHT EVENS. “You can imagine an adventure, then create the characters until they come alive, and then, when you get back to the plot think,” Nah, that won’t cut it”, and end up keeping the character rather than the story.”

MON COLONEL & SPIT. “I write what is not said, what is thought in his head without being able to say, backbiting, the favorites, song choruses, names of musicians or artists … at first I thought it looked like inscriptions on school benches, cell walls, doors WC, scribbled notebooks talking on the phone. I fixed a flow somehow . this is also why we are interested in the Internet stream. (…) All this mass snapshots, moods, daily, this is the time that passes and I fixed in my drawings in my paintings, even in my comics.”

HUSKMITNAVN. “My simple everyday life is my main source of inspiration. I try to squeeze as many ideas out of it as possible. I try my best not to look too much at what other people are doing, but Walt Disney, old Asterix comics, Keith Haring, Charles Burns and Edvard Munch are some of my many sources of inspiration.”

BRECHT VANDENBROUCKE. “In the art world, everyone has an opinion on everything. I wanted to picture mine. Attacking the icons from pop culture, or art is the best way to reach people. Everyone knows Munch’s The Scream, or Street Fighter. One quickly understands what I mean, what I am referring to is not necessarily an elitist and obscure reference that a minority of people will understand. If I choose these subjects there is also a pure fun, pleasure of the absurd.”
